Day 4 of 7 : วันนี้ควรจะต้องมีสตอรี่บอร์ดแล้วนะ

11:33 am วันนี้ติดหล่มความคิดหลายรอบ จะบ้าตาย เอาล่ะ มาทำอนิเมชั่นประจำวันต่อก่อนดีกว่า เวลาเหลือแบบนี้มีอีกไม่มาก (มากไปก็ใช่ว่าจะดีนะเวลาน่ะ) ก่อนจะไปทำงานประจำอีกครั้ง มาดูสกิลแชร์ต่อก่อนดีกว่าน่ะ ใจวอกแวกใช่ อยากไปทำสามมิติ ไปเรียนเบลนเดอร์ต่อ อยากกลับไปเขียนคอมิคอีกใช่ แน่นอนมันสนุก กิจกรรมอะไรที่เป็นอินพุทใหม่ๆมันทำให้สมองเรากระเตื้องขึ้นอีกครั้งใช่ แต่เราก็ยังต้องกลับมาทำโปรเจคยาวอันหลักที่จำเป็นต้องอาศัยการทำต่อเนื่องไง คือไปเคาะสนิมด้วยอย่างอื่นได้ แต่ก็ต้องเวียนกลับมาทำงานหลักอันนี้ด้วยน่ะ คล้ายๆว่าไปทำอย่างอื่นเพื่อให้ตัวเองได้ฟิน แต่จะฟินเรื่อยไปไม่ได้ไง เพราะไม่งั้นงานที่วางแผนไว้ตรงนี้มันก็จะไม่จบไง ใช่แหล่ะ คล้ายๆว่า เอากิจกรรมทำสิ่งใหม่ๆ คิดใหม่ๆ อินพุท เอาพุทใหม่ๆ เพื่อให้ตัวเองได้จัดการกับความเบื่อ ความเหนื่อยหน่าย พอเครื่องติดอีกครั้งก็กลับมาทำงานหลักของเราก็คือ อนิเมชั่น หนึ่งอาทิตย์อันนี้น่ะ มั้ง

Topic #3 Character

• Why do we care about this story?

• Create a believable character.

• Utilise the character spectrum (Realistic <-> Creative)

Step #3

• Choose an interesting character from your freewriting.

• Freewrite about them to get to know them.

• Write at least 900 words.

Topic #4 Showing vs. Telling

• John was angry. = tell the reader how to interpret the action = telling

• John pushed his wife’s bookshelf down a flight of stairs. = show them the action and let them make a decision about it = showing

• Tips for ‘Showing’

  • raise the level of specificity. the more the specific, the less likely it will be telling.

  • use verbs and nouns instead of adjectives and adverbs.

  • Examples

    • Telling: John’s car was the best.

    • Showing: John’s father gave him a cherry red El Camino when he was sixteen. He woke up every morning at 5 a.m. to wash it by hand. It was six years later and it still looked brand new.

    • ขอฝึกหน่อย แทนที่จะบอกว่า คุณพี่ยี่หร่าขี้เม้า ก็บอกว่า

• Fried เล่าให้ฟังว่า นอกจากการเล่าเรื่องแบบ โชว์ ไม่ใช่ บอก เนี่ย นอกจากจะทำให้คนอ่านรู้สึกอยากรู้เพิ่มเติมแล้ว มันยังเป็นจุดขยายต่อเรื่องราวหรือข้อมูลอื่นๆเพิ่มเติมได้อีก เช่นในประโยคตัวอย่างข้างบน การที่บอกว่าจอห์นโกรธ มันก็จบแค่ว่าเค้าโกรธ แต่ถ้าบอกว่า จอห์นผลักเอาชั้นหนังสือของภรรยาตกลงบันได มันก็จะช่วยสานต่อเรื่องราวว่า ชั้นหนังสือจะตกลงไปในรูปแบบไหน หรือว่าการที่เรารู้ว่าภรรยาของเค้าชอบอ่านหนังสือ หรือว่าการที่เรารู้ข้อมูลว่าเค้ากับภรรยาอยู่บ้านที่เป็นสองชั้น เป็นต้น ดังนั้นในฐานะของนักเขียน การ โชว์ ช่วย gives momentum in your draft น่ะ

• Showing ดีตอนที่เราต้องการให้คนอ่านได้ experience information emotionally.

• Telling ดีตอนที่เราต้องการให้คนอ่านได้ understand information โดยที่เค้าไม่จำเป็นต้อง experience it emotionally งิน่ะ

  • การใช้ Telling เช่น They lived in Idaho for forty years. คนอ่านไม่จำเป็นต้อง experience emotionally ขนาดนั้นกับข้อมูลนี้เป็นต้นน่ะ

• Showing even in thoughts เทคนิกนี้ใช้ได้กับเสียงในหัวของคาแรกเตอร์ด้วยน่ะ

  • Telling: “I’m a very morbid person, she thought.” อันนี้คนอ่านอาจจะไม่เอนจอยเพราะเราบอกเค้าไปเลยว่าคาแรกเตอร์คิดยังไงอยู่น่ะ

  • Showing: “Every time I see a beautiful butterfly, she thought, I think of the inevitability of my own death.” อันนี้คือเราให้คาแรกเตอร์ think a morbid thought แล้วเราก็ปล่อยให้คนอ่านตัดสินใจเองว่าคาแรกเตอร์กำลังคิดอะไร morbid น่ะ

• Step #4

  • Show your character in action.

    • By showing them do their everyday tasks: they are commuting to work, mowing their lawn, brushing their teeth.

  • Use their actions to reveal their personality.

    • we want to get the sense of who they are by how they do their actions.

    • for example, do your character whistle while they rake the leaves in their yard or do they get so frustrated they break the rake over their knee.

  • Write at least 300 words showing your character and action.

• Topic #5 Desire + Obstacle

  • How to turn character and showing method above into a story?

  • By using a desire and an obstacle, the tension between these two things will drive your plot forward. Maybe your character wants something that he or she can’t get. Or, maybe he or she is afraid of something they can’t avoid.

  • You want to make sure to get to know your character really well because their core desire is going to inform what obstacle you choose for them.
